Summer is in the air, cigarette smoke is not, well not in Sweden’s outdoor bars and restaurants.
As the World Health Organization marked “World No Tobacco Day” on Wednesday, Sweden, which has the lowest rate of smoking in the Europe Union, is close to declaring itself “smoke free” — defined as having fewer than 5% daily smokers in the population.
Many experts give credit to decades of anti-smoking campaigns and legislation, while others point to the prevalence of Snus.
Whatever the reason, the 5% milestone is now within reach. Only 6.4% of Swedes over 15 were daily smokers in 2019, the lowest in the EU and far below the average of 18.5% across the 27-nation bloc, according to the Eurostat statistics agency.
Figures from the Public Health Agency of Sweden show the smoking rate has continued to fall since then, reaching 5.6% last year.
Whilst over here in enlightened England, Ministers are urging 1 million smokers to swap cigarettes for vapes, despite increasing alarm about the rise in young people vaping.
Under the new “swap to stop” scheme, vape starter kits will be offered to almost one in five of all smokers in England as part of the government’s “smoke free” drive.
Pregnant women will also be offered up to £400 to stop smoking and a consultation will be launched on introducing mandatory advice on quitting smoking to be placed in cigarette packs.
The scheme comes on top of plans to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to under-18s. A survey by Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) found that vaping among 11- to 17-year-olds has increased from 3.3% in 2021 to 7% last year.
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is trying to balance finding ways to cut underage vaping while at the same time ensuring vapes are available to help adult smokers to quit.
The health minister Neil O’Brien will launch the new schemes in a speech on Tuesday.
“Up to two out of three lifelong smokers will die from smoking. Cigarettes are the only product on sale which will kill you if used correctly,” he is expected to say.
“We will offer a million smokers new help to quit. We will be funding a new national ‘swap to stop’ scheme – the first of its kind in the world.
“We will work with councils and others to offer a million smokers across England a free vaping starter kit.”
O’Brien said the government was concerned about the rise in youth vaping, and said he wanted a “clampdown” on businesses that were “getting children hooked on nicotine”.
As part of the plans a choice of products, strengths and flavours will be on offer to allow adult smokers to find the best alternative for them.
Zero mention of Snus – of nicotine pouches. It doesn’t even factor in their initiatives. No Killa, all filler. Now obviously it would be too much of a leap for them to be suggesting people use nicopods. I mean it’s only working wonders over in Sweden and has been for a significant amount of time.
It’s worth noting that nicotine is often portrayed in a negative light because of its addictive nature. However, most people don’t know that some foods like potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants also contain nicotine. Nicotine is present in these natural foods that you consume every day.
The answer is quantity. Nicotine is like the aspirin of the modern world. If you take it in controlled doses, it can help you. However, if you use too much aspirin, it could lead to drowsiness, vomiting, and a ton of other health risks. The critical part is to adopt moderation and use a less harmful version of nicotine. One that goes by the name of Snus and/or nicopods and is no Killa.
